Join Olympic champion Jess Fox as she dives into the story behind one of life's most essential resources: water. From paddling rivers to meeting the people who make it all possible, Jess is on a mission to show how water connects every part of our lives.
Taking care of your water is what drives us. Every drop that flows through your tap carries the dedication of a team working to protect the rivers Jess paddles, the glasses you fill, and the communities we serve.
We support over 5 million people across Greater Sydney, providing clean, safe drinking water every day.
Ever wondered what it takes to keep your water clean, safe, and ready for every moment? It's a remarkable process:
We use fine mesh screens to catch things like twigs and leaves, adjust the pH, and help tiny particles stick together with a process called coagulation.
Then, the water flows through sand and coal filters that we clean regularly to keep everything running smoothly.
Small amounts of chlorine are added to make sure the water stays safe and free from harmful germs.
We keep a close eye on every drop, testing it at every step to make sure it's super clean and safe for you.
On average, each person in Greater Sydney uses about 200 litres of drinking-quality water every day. From the moment you wake up to the time you wind down, water supports every little thing.
As the population grows, the demand for clean, safe drinking water also grows. Currently, Greater Sydney's drinking water demand is around 540 billion litres per year. It's expected to increase to 600–670 billion litres annually as the population surpasses 8 million.
To meet this demand and ensure a secure supply of clean, safe drinking water for generations to come, we're putting our future first by investing in advanced technologies such as desalination and purified recycled water (PRW).
Securing our water future means expanding and diversifying our water sources to meet the needs of a growing population and adapt to climate change.
To address future challenges, we aim for 65% of the city's drinking water to be independent of rainfall by 2050. A key part of this strategy is purified recycled water (PRW), which is sourced from water used in homes and industries, then treated to meet strict safety standards.
By incorporating PRW into the water supply, we're building a more resilient system, to ensure a sustainable and drought-proof water source for generations to come.
Every drop that reaches your tap reflects our commitment to delivering safe, clean water today and for generations to come.
Together, we're building a sustainable future for Greater Sydney.
